DAMAGED HAMMER CAGE
BRIDGEND AC THROWS CAGE - Update
In recent high winds the hammer cage at Newbridge Field's track was damaged and in fear of collapsing when it was brought to our attention by the emergency services. Bridgend AC mobilised a local builder to dismantle the dangerous sections and make the site safe.

In the meantime, the club, who funded the initial cage and then the extension (to conform with IAAF rules) have had contact with the contractors at the Aberdare track facility, whose throws cage is being removed as the track is relocating. We can now confirm that this cage will be coming to replace the damaged one in Bridgend in the very near future.

As a volunteer club, that is self funded, the ability to quickly find £12,000 for a new cage was not viable, so the current situation is on-going as described above. Given that the club is endeavouring to find the £6,000 required to replace the High Jump bed cover (which was set alight over a year ago), having already acquired the £2,500 for a high jump bed, (from grants and local benefactors) which was also destroyed by fire, it is a constant struggle to constantly find free funding for such challenges.

The clubs throwers and throws coach are equally frustrated with the situation, as junior members (who figure highly in the UK rankings) have the inconvenience of travelling to and training at Neath & Cardiff. Planned competitions have had to be cancelled/postponed which are much needed fund raisers for the club.

Bridgend AC committee recognises it has a duty to provide facilities that are safe and useable, but such damage from the weather and vandals, was unforeseen and gives the club challenges on top of it's normal expenditure to run the facility and it's many teams, for it's membership (which is approaching 200) all year round at track & field, cross country and road running. CHILD WELFARE - dropping off/collecting
It is crucial that parents/guardian drop off/collect their child/children from all the venues being used by Bridgend AC. All athletes MUST be signed in. This is extremely important, especially during the winter months to ensure the safety of your child/children as sessions are sometimes cancelled due to the weather conditions where it is deemed unsafe to train and due to the shortage of indoor training space. NEVER ASSUME that your child's/children's coach will be there as they can at times be caught up in work, traffic or an emergency and are not in a position to contact you to say the session is cancelled. Please DO NOT leave the venue until your child's/children's coach has arrived to take the session. JD

ATHLETICS WEEKLY 2012 TOP 20 LISTS
Congratulations go out to 3 Bridgend AC athletes who have made the 20th December 2012 Edition of Athletics Weekly which features the 2012 age group rankings for UK U13 to seniors, UK masters and Senior International rankings. The athletes are as follows:
U15 girls 300m: Zoe Nash, UK ranking 13th with a time of 42.48
U17 Womens hammer: Zoe Dakin, UK ranking 3rd with a distance of 45m 08cm
U20 Womens hammer: Zoe Dakin, UK ranking 19th, 45m 08cm
U20 Mens High Jump: Stephen Guest, UK ranking =12th, with a leap of 2.00m
These rankings have been taken from the Power of 10 results website which collates results and data on all athletes and can be accessed by anyone on www.thepowerof10.info by either searching by event or by athletes name. The power of 10 was set up to encourage better peformances and sets a top ten target for each event that should be attainable by at least 10 athletes in that age group event. The target is reviewed each year to set new challenges and raise standards. If an athlete performs above the Top 10 target, then they and their coach receive an award from the site's sponsor, McCain. The rankings can also be checked by region, so you can compare you performances against others in your event. You can aslo check out the results of most athletics meetings, cross country, road, etc.
Porthcawl Lions (High Tide) Boxing Day Run 4.75 Miles
You can never tell what to expect in the way of weather at this race, though this was probably one of the warmest Boxing Days for some years. Bridgend AC notoriously support this race every year and with great success and 2012 was not one to disappoint. In 1st place overall was Morgan Davies U20 in a time of 27mins 12. Hot on his heels and 3rd overall, 1st Senior Lady was Kate Roberts in 28mins 20. Richard Dando crossed the line for 4th overall and 3rd Senior Man, 28mins 27. Jeff Thomas was next for Bridgend in 24th overall and 8th V40(m) 33mins 14, followed by Dave (splits) Hughes, 56th overall and 2nd V45(m), 35mins 57. There was an excellent performance for Felicity Williamson-Sarll, who at U15 won the U20 womens race in a time of 34.48. Sadly only the first 89 runners had their times recorded, so for all those other members of the club that may have run, but did not appear in the results, WELL DONE. JD
